10 Ways to Prepare Your Home for a Newborn Photo Session

Welcoming a newborn is one of the most exciting and tender moments of life, and capturing those early days through a photo session can help preserve memories that last a lifetime. I’ve found that setting the stage at home can make all the difference in the final images.

Here are 10 simple but effective ways to prepare your home for a newborn photo session:

1. Choose the Best Time of Day

Newborns are often sleepiest and most content in the morning. Schedule your session during this time to increase your chances of a calm and cooperative baby. If you’re using natural light, consider when your home gets the best window light.

2. Declutter Key Spaces

You don’t need to deep-clean the whole house, but focus on tidying areas that will be in photos: typically the nursery, master bedroom, and living room. Removing distractions like cords, cluttered nightstands, and extra decor helps keep the focus on your beautiful baby.

3. Let in the Light

Open blinds and curtains to allow as much natural light in as possible. Soft, diffused daylight is ideal for newborn photography. It flatters skin tones and gives photos a warm, organic feel.

4. Set the Temperature

Newborns can get cold quickly, especially if they’ll be photographed in minimal clothing or swaddles. Warm up your home (around 75°F) before the session so baby stays comfortable and sleepy.

5. Pick Out Outfits and Wraps in Advance

Simple, neutral tones work best for newborns. Avoid bold patterns or logos. Soft fabrics and timeless styles help keep the focus on your baby’s features and ensure your photos age beautifully.

6. Keep Essentials Nearby

Have diapers, wipes, burp cloths, pacifiers, and extra clothes within arm’s reach. You’ll likely need to pause for a feeding or change, and having these items handy keeps the session flowing smoothly.

7. Prep the Siblings (and Pets!)

If older siblings or pets will be in the photos, talk to them about what to expect. Have a few quiet activities or snacks ready for kids, and make sure pets are groomed if they’ll be included.

8. Tidy the Bed and Sofa

Crisp white or neutral bedding is a favorite backdrop for lifestyle newborn sessions. Make your bed, fluff the pillows, and consider layering soft throws or blankets for a cozy, inviting look.

9. Have a Feeding Right Before the Session

A full baby is a sleepy baby. Try to time a feeding just before the session starts so your newborn is content and more likely to drift off peacefully during photos.

10. Relax and Embrace the Moment

Babies can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! Feedings, fussiness, and breaks are to be expected. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your baby will be. These photos are about capturing your family’s love, not perfection.

Your home doesn’t need to be Pinterest-perfect to have beautiful newborn photos. A little thoughtful prep goes a long way in making the experience enjoyable and the images memorable. Remember: these early days are fleeting, so take a deep breath, enjoy the snuggles, and let the photos tell your family’s story. You will look back on these 10 years from now and be so grateful you did!
